It looks like Billy Joel, with a bushy mustache and shaggy hair. It sounds like Billy Joel, too, with a distinctly Long Island accent. It even moves a bit like Billy Joel, smiling slightly, nodding his head and blinking.

But is it actually him?

The answer is complicated, at least in relation to a new AI-enhanced documentary, "1971: Billy Joel’s Lost Interview." Its director, Adam Ripp, obtained a long-lost radio interview with Joel, edited it down, then put the words into the mouth of a lifelike Joel generated with artificial intelligence. 

The result might be called part fact and part fiction, or perhaps science-fiction. Audiences will be able to judge for themselves when the film holds its world premiere on September 25 at the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame in Stony Brook.
