AMALGAM | FEATURED ARTIST — YUKA ISHIKAWA

As part of our ongoing editorial series highlighting selected artists from AMALGAM: Contemporary Jewellery in Hybrid Systems, we introduce Yuka Ishikawa — a Japan-based contemporary jewellery artist whose practice explores impermanence, transformation and the quiet relationship between what changes and what endures.

Self-taught since 2016, Yuka creates sculptural jewellery that exists between wearable object and contemporary art. Working primarily with silver, enamel and natural gemstones, she allows oxidation, cracking, chipping and other material changes to become part of each work rather than something to prevent.

At the heart of her practice is a simple belief: nothing truly disappears. Weathered architecture, rusted metal, eroded surfaces, changing landscapes and the aging human body all inform a visual language in which transformation is understood not as decline, but as evidence that life continues.

Yuka also challenges traditional jewellery-making processes by embedding natural gemstones directly into wax before casting. Instead of protecting the stone from fire and setting it afterwards, stone and metal pass through the transformation together. For Yuka, the gemstone is not an ornament added to the work — it is the soul that has inhabited the body from the beginning.

This philosophy continues once the jewellery meets its wearer. Silver oxidizes, surfaces respond to touch, and each piece gradually absorbs memory and time. The moment a work leaves the studio is therefore not its conclusion, but the beginning of another stage in its existence.

“Time is therefore not an enemy in my work. It is a quiet collaborator.” — Yuka Ishikawa
