AMALGAM | FEATURED ARTIST — JAESEOB SHIN

As part of our ongoing editorial series highlighting selected artists from AMALGAM: Contemporary Jewellery in Hybrid Systems, we introduce Jaeseob Shin — a South Korean contemporary jewellery artist whose practice investigates the ambiguous territory he describes as the “intermediate zone.”

Born in South Korea in 1993, Jaeseob completed his Ph.D. coursework in Metal Craft Design at Seoul National University of Science and Technology. In 2026, his work was presented during Munich Jewellery Week, and he was selected as a recipient of the One For The Future award at NYC Jewelry Week.

At the centre of his practice is an interest in the binaries through which we understand the world: up and down, light and dark, life and death, use and non-use. Rather than choosing one side, Jaeseob turns his attention to the uncertain space between them — considering the midpoint not as an absence, but as a vital bridge.

Through rings created in deliberately unwearable forms, he disrupts one of jewellery’s most familiar relationships: that between object and function. The ring remains recognisable, yet its expected purpose becomes unstable, opening questions about where jewellery ends and another kind of object begins.

For AMALGAM, Jaeseob extends this investigation by placing metal rings into unexpected encounters. They are handled with chopsticks, forks and knives, or placed on a tongue, visually connecting jewellery with an entirely different realm of existence. Removed from conventional contexts of adornment, the familiar object becomes strange again.

“I believe the midpoint between these extremes can serve as a vital bridge.” — Jaeseob Shin
