As part of our ongoing editorial series highlighting selected artists from AMALGAM: Contemporary Jewellery in Hybrid Systems, we introduce Natalia Gaviria Barreneche — a multidisciplinary artist whose practice explores the intersection of nature, bio-futurism, spirituality and emerging technology.

At the centre of Natalia’s creative universe is Bionature, an evolving ecosystem where nature and technology are imagined not as opposing forces, but as interconnected forms of intelligence. Through this world, she explores technology as a bridge toward consciousness, ancestral wisdom and transformation, guided by ideas of intention, purpose and spiritual connection.

For AMALGAM, Natalia presents Living Talismans — a speculative exploration of the artifact as a living system of memory, transformation and participation. Neither simply jewellery, sculpture nor technology, these ceremonial objects are conceived to continue evolving beyond the artist’s hands.

The project creates an imagined dialogue between the ceremonial goldsmithing traditions of Colombia and the spiritual material philosophy of Japan. Gold becomes a bridge between humanity, nature and the sacred, while beauty is understood as something transformed through time, ritual and care.

Each Living Talisman is intentionally incomplete. Its final activation belongs to the wearer, who assembles, weaves or positions elements of the artifact. From that moment, movement, touch, climate, repair and time continue writing its story. The wearer is no longer simply the recipient of the work — they become its co-author.

Ultimately, Natalia imagines an object capable of extending beyond a single lifetime: something that can be repaired, transformed and passed between generations, accumulating memories without erasing those that came before.
