Despite the looming burden of a major structural budget deficit, BART had its largest day of ridership since the COVID-19 pandemic last Tuesday with 242,090 trips.

Since the pandemic, BART has been making continuous efforts to get people back on Bay Area public transportation, seeing improvements across margins such as train delays, customer satisfaction and crime rates. However, last Tuesday’s ridership of 242,090 trips is only about 60% of the 400,000 trips per weekday that BART used to reach on average pre-pandemic.

“We have seen some ridership gains in recent years, but the most significant growth has been in the last year,” said BART spokesperson Chris Filippi. “It’s because people are coming back to a BART that’s safer, cleaner and more reliable. And as that service provides the kind of quality that our riders expect, they’re more likely to keep coming back to us.”
