Do you ever find yourself looking around at your peers and feeling scared? “Why am I not as successful as they are?” “I’m falling behind, while everyone else surges ahead.” “Wow. Their house, their car, their marriage, their LIFE is perfect and mine sucks. Therefore, I suck.” Welcome to the world of social media—where we are tricked into believing that what we see is factual, and therefore, what we feel about ourselves is also factual.

Success and Failure. Loaded terms that have the potential to propel you towards purpose or derail you into self-sabotage. My parents grew up in poverty, and therefore, I was conditioned to believe that “success” = financial security and wealth, even at the cost of happiness and health. It was better to have lots and lots of money in the bank WHILE BEING MISERABLE, than entertain even the slightest uncertainty over your next paycheck in pursuit of passion, fulfillment, and joy. This was a lesson I learned so early on and so so well, I still struggle with elevating my values over my fears.

When it comes to overcoming our fear of failure, the single most important thing I’ve learned is that failure is inevitable. There are too many things outside of your control to guard against ever falling. But you know what IS in your control? What you do when you fall down. Will you stay down there? Wallow in self-pity and despair? Kick aimlessly at the dirt and pound your fists because you’re mad? You can do that for awhile. I usually do. But… eventually, I wipe the dirt from my ass, and I get back up. Sometimes, I’ll keep going straight ahead, and sometimes, I’ll turn right, I’ll turn left. It doesn’t really matter. The point is:
