Sleepy Hollow (NY) might have the coolest mascot in all of high school football 🐎👻

Imagine seeing this as the opposing team…

(via @Horsemen_Sports)

Sleepy Hollow High School in Tarrytown, New York, has a name that already feels like it was made for Friday night football. Add in a Headless Horseman riding onto the field on horseback, and it creates one of the most unique entrances you’ll see anywhere in the country.

The connection comes from The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Washington Irving’s famous story featuring the Headless Horseman. With the school located in the area that inspired the story, Sleepy Hollow has the opportunity to bring a piece of local history and folklore directly onto the football field.

There are plenty of memorable mascots and traditions throughout high school football, but it’s hard to match this visual. A dark-clad Headless Horseman riding an actual horse around the field looks more like something out of a movie than a typical Friday night game.

Sleepy Hollow is currently 0-2 to begin the 2026 season after losses to Byram Hills and Hendrick Hudson. The Horsemen are set to return to action against Westlake on Friday, September 18.

Regardless of what happens on the scoreboard this season, Sleepy Hollow has a game-day tradition that immediately stands out. High school football is filled with unique entrances, mascots and traditions across the country, and the Headless Horseman might be one of the most fitting combinations of a school’s identity and its hometown history.

Could this be the coolest mascot in high school football? 🐎👻
