Happy Birthday to Matazō Kayama 💙

The late Japanese artist was born on this day in 1927 in Kyoto. Kayama is known for his Nihonga-style paintings of wildlife, nature, and mythology, which he brought to the exterior of the BMW 535i in 1990.

After finishing his re-interpretation of the BMW with airbrush paint and traditional Japanese techniques such as Kirigane (metalcut) and Arare (foil printing), Kayama remarked: “The clean lines of the BMW came clearest to me once the car was fully masked.”
