In Focus: Gabriel Orozco, ‘The Clapping Industry (Lluvia de Aplausos)’ (2025) at White Cube Bermondsey ✨ 

Gabriel Orozco’s mixed-media installation ‘The Clapping Industry’ (2025) suspends a canopy of black umbrellas overhead, while the sound of recorded applause fills the surrounding space.

The work emerged from the artist’s attention to the ritualised applause circulating through newsfeeds. Divorced from any speaker or visible spectacle, the clapping is left without an apparent recipient, becoming what art historian Briony Fer refers to as ‘an empty ritual of applause’. The effect is both comic and disquieting: beneath the umbrellas, an otherwise vacant space appears absurdly sheltered from the figurative downpour of acclaim.
