Japan’s response to the Unification Church controversy started a much bigger conversation about religion, fear, money, and control. 👀 Japan didn’t ban teaching children about hell, but its child-abuse guidance says using threats like “you’ll go to hell” to frighten children into religious participation can constitute psychological abuse. The country also enacted protections aimed at coercive donation practices after families reported devastating financial consequences connected to religious giving. Faith is personal. Giving is personal. But there is a difference between choosing something because of your beliefs and doing it because you’ve been made terrified of what will happen if you DON’T. And that conversation is worth having here in America too.
