There is a candidate on Arizona’s November ballot sitting in a Maricopa County jail who says he can’t afford to post bail.

David Redkey, 45, is the Green Party nominee in Arizona’s 3rd Congressional District. He was booked into jail on Saturday, September 19.

Court records list a computer tampering charge and counts of threatening or intimidating. Outlets are reporting the exact charge breakdown slightly differently, so that will get cleaned up as the case moves.

According to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, detectives with its Threat Management Unit contacted Redkey on September 19 and he admitted to the communications.

Prosecutors say he emailed threats to a Superior Court judge and to an attorney’s office. At his first court appearance, Deputy County Attorney Stephen Garcia told the judge the emails referenced a gun, and that the gun was never recovered, which he called a grave concern for the state. The prosecutor also said the threats extended to the victims’ children and to others in public service.

The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office has asked the court to seal his arrest documents to protect the victims’ information, so neither the judge nor the attorney has been named publicly.

His bond was set at $150,000. He told the court he does not have the money and that he will not be able to campaign.

He shook his head during the prosecutor’s remarks. No attorney has been reported speaking on his behalf.

One more piece of this. Redkey qualified for the general election ballot as a Green Party candidate, but the Arizona Green Party does not want him. It lists him as actively opposed, and a party spokesperson told Arizona’s Family last month that the opposition is due to a pattern of abusive behavior that got him banned from the Arizona Democratic Party and the Democratic Socialists of Phoenix.

These are charges. Nobody has been convicted of anything. His name is still on the November ballot.

His next court hearing was scheduled for Thursday.

Everything above comes from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office and Maricopa County Superior Court records.
