Maricopa County has now had more measles cases this year than in any year in the last three decades.

The county has confirmed 28 cases so far in 2026. For context, it had zero last year, two the year before, and over the past 30 years it has averaged about one case a year.

The newest case is a Valley resident who picked up the virus while traveling out of the county. Before they knew they were sick, they spent time at the Walgreens at 11250 E. Via Linda in Scottsdale, near Shea and Frank Lloyd Wright.

If you were in that store on Tuesday, September 8, between 8 and 10:25 a.m., the county wants you to watch for symptoms through September 29.

You did not need to be near the person. Measles can hang in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves a room. Symptoms usually show up seven to twelve days after exposure but can take as long as three weeks. Watch for a fever over 101, red and watery eyes, a cough, or a runny nose. If you get sick, the county says stay home and call your doctor before showing up so they can keep you from exposing anyone else.

There is some good news in this. Arizona had gone five straight weeks without a new case before this travel-related one, and statewide there have been no deaths reported.

The county says 96 percent of this year’s cases have been in people who were not vaccinated. Its chief medical officer, Dr. Nick Staab, is urging people to get the MMR vaccine, and says infants 6 to 11 months old at higher risk can get an early dose.

Everything above comes from the Maricopa County Department of Public Health.
