Imagine building a mansion so extravagant that its purpose was to tell the world: we’ve made it.

In the 1890s, Alva Vanderbilt set out to create one of America’s most spectacular homes. The result was Marble House in Newport, Rhode Island—a lavish Gilded Age residence filled with European furnishings, elaborate rooms and, of course, an extraordinary amount of marble.

When the house was unveiled, it became a sensation. At its 1892 housewarming party, electric lights—still a remarkable novelty at the time—were strung across the house and grounds, illuminating the marble and making the Vanderbilt statement impossible to miss.

But Marble House is only one stop on this journey through extraordinary architecture.

From the palaces of royalty to the homes of the fabulously wealthy, discover what these buildings reveal about power, ambition, personality and excess in the Curiosity Stream Original series The History of Home Presents: History’s Greatest Homes.

Watch “The Rich and the Royal” now on Curiosity Stream.
