Lotuses surround Lakshmi in this 17th-century wood carving from the Rubin collection. The Hindu goddess of wealth, prosperity, and good fortune sits on a lotus, with another beneath her extended right foot and additional lotuses in each hand.

One of Lakshmi’s names is Kamala, meaning “lotus.” Below her, a “vase of plenty” (purnaghata) overflows with scrolling vines. Along with her elaborate jewelry, these details connect Lakshmi with beauty, abundance, and prosperity.

Mahalakshmi Vrat, a Hindu observance dedicated to Lakshmi, began on September 18. Traditionally observed over sixteen days, the festival may include fasting, prayer, and offerings of flowers and lamps.

Lakshmi’s abundance isn’t only material. She is also connected with well-being, flourishing, and the conditions that help individuals, families, and communities thrive.
