Leisure activities, such as reading for pure enjoyment, often get pushed to the bottom of the to-do list in favor of deadlines, notifications and constant academic demands.

However, for one hour every two weeks at D.H. Hill Jr. Library students get a rare reprieve; an opportunity, or “permission,” to read, according to Marian Fragola, director of community engagement for the libraries.

The Silent Reading Society, cocreated by Fragola and her colleagues Chris Tonelli, director of libraries communications, and Chris Vitiello, communications strategist, provides this structured sanctuary.

Participants are free to bring anything that interests them or choose something from the selection Vitiello curates from the library’s collection.
