As a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, my hands are my livelihood. 🖐️ Here are 5 things you won’t catch me doing:

🐶 Breaking up a dog fight with my bare hands: Dog bites can cause serious injuries to tendons, nerves, and bones. I've even seen a patient whose dog bit his fingertip completely off while he was breaking up a fight. Never put your hands between fighting dogs…or else you may have to come see me!

🧤 Gardening without gloves: Even a tiny puncture from a thorn can introduce bacteria or fungi into your hand, potentially causing a serious infection such as flexor tenosynovitis. The treatment is often surgical.

✋ Reaching underneath a lawnmower: Even after the engine is turned off, the blade can rotate a small turn unexpectedly, especially if you are dislodging something like a stick. I have seen some pretty bad finger amputations from lawnmowers.

🔫 Putting my finger over the barrel of a gun: I've had several patients who blew a finger off just while just cleaning their gun…and their finger happened to be over the barrel.

📈 Holding an EKG: EKGs are like kryptonite to an orthopedic surgeon such as myself. If there's a broken bone, I can fix it. If the Ancef pump (a.k.a. heart) isn't working, time to call someone else. If you know, you know.
