5 things I’d recommend if you’re trying to break into the world of sports media:

1. Just Start Creating
Don’t wait for that “perfect” camera, or job or opportunity. Start creating with whatever you have and learn by actually photographing or designing graphics for games, athletes, and events.

2. Build Your Portfolio and Social Media
Your work is your resume. You didn’t create as much as possible to keep it on your laptop. Build a portfolio that shows people what you’re capable of.

3. Get Around ANY Sport
Don’t be picky about what sport you’re covering. Every opportunity is a chance to gain experience, meet people, and add something new to your portfolio.

4. Learn More Than Just Photography
Sports media is bigger than just photography. Learn graphic design, video, editing, social media, storytelling etc. The more you can offer, the more valuable you become.

5. Be Consistent & Be Patient
Growth takes time. Keep creating even if you feel no ones is seeing your work. Keep improving, and keep putting yourself out there. A lot of the opportunities I’ve had came from simply staying consistent and reaching out over the last few years.

As someone still developing and still learning, these are just some tips, yet they are some of the biggest things I’ve learned along the way.
