We tend to imagine “cages” as obvious things:

Bad jobs.
Bad marriages.
Bad bosses.
Financial struggle.

But I posit that the most dangerous cage you’ll ever inhabit is one you cannot put your finger on - the reason being, it is the one that rewards you. One that applauds you. One that tells you “Good job.”

That is the idea behind Gilt Free. Since the book launched, thousands of readers have written to me with a version of the same sentence:
“I finally understand why I accomplished so much but still felt trapped.”

That sentence is exactly why I wrote this book. This week on The COACHED Podcast, I’m sharing something I never planned to release publicly - the complete introduction to Gilt Free.

You’ll hear why I believe success without freedom isn’t success at all.

You’ll hear the remarkable story of Consuelo Vanderbilt, who walked away from one of history’s most enviable lives in order to reclaim herself.

You’ll hear how Carl Jung’s idea of individuation became the psychological foundation beneath everything I now teach.

And you’ll hear the story I almost never tell—the moment I realized that what needed to die wasn’t me.
It was the performance.

Because that is the real work - not becoming more impressive, but becoming more honest.

If you’ve been wondering whether it’s time to stop living according to everyone else’s expectations and start living according to your own soul, I hope you’ll listen.

I wrote Gilt Free for the people who have already achieved enough to know achievement isn’t the answer.

As the quote goes, that opens the book:
“People really start to get interesting as soon as they start rattling the bars of their cages.” — Alain de Botton

I hope this episode helps you begin rattling yours. Available on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple. Link in bio.
