When Kimberly Kovacik began The Thoroughbred Project, she wasn’t even planning to track Secretariat as an attribute in sport horse pedigrees. But the data revealed an interesting story: his biggest influence may have come not through his direct offspring, but through his daughters and their descendants.

Secretariat appears in 2,249 pedigrees of Thoroughbreds with USEF records in Kovacik’s research. His maternal grandsons include names like A.P. Indy, Gone West, Storm Cat, and Dehere, and following those lines forward reveals even more connections to performance horses.

One particularly interesting branch leads from A.P. Indy to Malibu Moon, who produced 48 offspring with USEF records, including seven who competed at the CCI5* level and two who competed at 1.45m at the CSI3* level.

Swipe through to see how Big Red’s influence traveled through generations and into modern sport horse pedigrees.
