A snow-covered orchard. ☃️🍎

We may be tired of shoveling, but seasonal snow is actually quite helpful to the orchard. Snow itself contains nutrients that help improve the souls which, slowly release over time as it melts. Precipitation collects nitrogen as is falls through the atmosphere. The gradual melting of snow allows the nitrogen to be slowly absorbed into the soil profile.

Out in the orchard, our trees can withstand these cold temperatures because their root system extends below the frost line in the ground. Their roots have the ability to release water into the surrounding soil which prevents internal damage and freezing to the root cells. The snow also acts as insulation, both for our trees - keeping them dormant until Spring is here to stay, and for our perennial crops like strawberries and flowers - protecting them from bitter temperatures.
