I recently shared this coaching tip with some of our superstar coaches at the @_footballfunfactory! ⁠
⁠
In my experience, one of the most effective ways to help children listen and engage is by positively reinforcing the behaviour you want to see.⁠
⁠
This can be especially important when coaching children with ADHD or SEND, where calling out behaviour in front of the group can sometimes create more pressure, overwhelm or unwanted attention.⁠
⁠
Of course, every child is different and some will need extra support, clearer instructions, visual cues, movement breaks or a slightly different approach.⁠
⁠
But as a general principle, focusing on the children who are showing great listening skills can be a brilliant place to start.⁠
⁠
Highlight specific examples: “I love how Olivia is sitting there with her eyes on me, brilliant listening!”⁠
⁠
Make your positive feedback enthusiastic and visible to the group.⁠
⁠
Children naturally want attention and validation. When they see that positive behaviour gets noticed, they’re far more likely to mirror it.⁠
⁠
This creates a ripple effect, raising the overall standard of behaviour without ever needing to raise your voice.⁠
⁠
Remember, what you pay attention to is what you’ll get more of. So keep your focus on the behaviour you want to see, celebrate it often, and always be ready to adapt your approach for the children in front of you.⁠
