1 year ago, Tame Impala released “Dracula.”

Kevin Parker, the sole creative force behind Tame Impala, wrote and produced 'Dracula' entirely on his own, recording it during sessions in his hometown of Fremantle and at his Wave House studio in Injidup, Western Australia, as the third single from his fifth studio album, 'Deadbeat.' It marked Tame Impala's first release under Columbia Records, arriving after two earlier singles that year, "End of Summer" and "Loser," continued building anticipation ahead of the album's full October release.

Blending disco and electropop, the track finds Parker singing about avoiding daylight like the titular vampire, leaning further into the groove-heavy, dance-adjacent direction he'd been exploring since 2020's 'The Slow Rush.' Julian Klincewicz directed the accompanying music video, opening with Parker walking through the wilderness trailed by a truck, a deliberately understated visual given the song's supernatural namesake, with Parker appearing without any of the campy vampire trappings the title might suggest.

Though the song debuted modestly on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 55 that October, it found dramatically renewed momentum the following February when a remix featuring South Korean singer Jennie sparked a viral TikTok trend, eventually pushing the collaboration to number two on the Billboard Global 200 and number five on the Hot 100, giving both artists their first-ever top-ten hit on that chart and cementing 'Dracula' as one of the standout crossover successes of Tame Impala's 'Deadbeat' era.
