1 year ago, Tate McRae released ‘TIT FOR TAT.’

Ryan Tedder and Grant Boutin produced 'Tit for Tat,' co-written by Tate McRae alongside Julia Michaels, releasing it as a standalone single through RCA Records before it later found a home on the deluxe edition of her third studio album, 'So Close to What.' McRae actually wrote the track mid-tour, working on it during a stop in Nashville that September before recording it just a week later at American Airlines Center in Dallas, squeezing studio time in between shows on her Miss Possessive Arena Tour.

The song arrived as a pointed answer track, responding to a recent single from her former partner that had expressed a wish to reconcile following their split earlier that year. McRae teased its arrival subtly at her concerts, flashing the abbreviated title "T4T" across a glitching tour screen before formally announcing the release with an Instagram post captioned simply "surpriseeee." She went on to perform the track live for the first time just a day after release, during a stop at the Kia Forum in Inglewood.

The single debuted inside the top five of the Billboard Hot 100, extending a hot streak that saw McRae fresh off a Video of the Year-caliber VMAs performance that Billboard had ranked number one of the night, along with wins for Song of the Summer and Best Editing. Its strong chart performance helped cement the song's later inclusion on 'So Close to What???,' the November deluxe edition of an album that had already made McRae's first-ever number-one debut on the Billboard 200 that February.
