14 years ago today, Kesha released “Die Young.”

Dr. Luke, Benny Blanco, and Cirkut produced 'Die Young,' co-writing it with Kesha and Fun. frontman Nate Ruess, who contributed the chorus lyrics while Kesha shaped the verses after returning from a period of extensive world travel. Released as the lead single from her sophomore album, 'Warrior,' through RCA and Kemosabe Records, the track marked her first new music since 2011's "Blow," and she initially previewed it with a viral clip of herself spontaneously singing the song on a Tokyo subway.

Blending dance-pop, electro house, and EDM, the song builds around handclaps and stomping percussion in its chorus, deliberately stripped of drums, before dropping into an unexpected, drum-heavy electronic breakdown during the verses, a structure Blanco described to Rolling Stone as intentionally jarring in the best way. Chris Applebaum and Darren Craig directed the accompanying music video, filmed that September, and two teaser trailers hinting at a mystery collaborator sparked online speculation that Rihanna might be featured, rumors that ultimately didn't pan out.

The single debuted at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 before climbing to number two, and went on to top the Mainstream Top 40 chart, becoming one of Kesha's signature hits. It's remained her most frequently performed song from the 'Warrior' era in her live shows ever since, and its lasting popularity led to placement in 'Just Dance 4,' further cementing "Die Young" as one of the defining party anthems of the early 2010s.
