‘How To Get Away With Murder’ premiered 12 years ago today.

Peter Nowalk, who'd worked his way up through Shondaland starting as a story editor on 'Grey's Anatomy' before rising to co-executive producer on 'Scandal,' created 'How to Get Away with Murder' as his first series as showrunner, with Shonda Rhimes serving as executive producer and mentor on the project. ABC ordered the pilot that December, and Viola Davis signed on as lead Annalise Keating that February, before the show officially got picked up to series that May, slotting into Thursday nights right after 'Scandal' as part of ABC's Shondaland programming block.

The legal drama follows Keating, a formidable criminal law professor and defense attorney at a prestigious Philadelphia university, whose five hand-picked students get pulled into a murder conspiracy after growing entangled in her orbit both academically and personally. Alongside Davis, the cast featured Billy Brown, Alfred Enoch, Jack Falahee, Aja Naomi King, Matt McGorry, and Karla Souza, with the series building its signature structure around interwoven flashbacks and flash-forwards that slowly revealed how each season's central murder actually unfolded.

The pilot drew more than 14 million live viewers on September 25, 2014, climbing past 20 million once DVR viewership was factored in, and critics responded especially warmly to Davis's performance in the lead role. The show ran for six seasons on ABC through May 2020, and Davis's work on the series later made her the first Black actress to win the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, cementing 'How to Get Away with Murder' as one of the defining legal thrillers of its era.
