Football, to many fans in Japan, extends beyond the lines of the pitch. Whether it’s cleaning up the stadiums after the matches, or proudly displaying the kimono designs from their hometowns, their values and culture are almost always embedded in the sport.

Narrated by lifelong fan Noriko Kubota, this short film directed by Hana Asano for Where is Football follows the many fans of Japan’s National Team during the 2026 World Cup, filmed around the match between Japan and Sweden in Dallas and Arlington, Texas. Like the simplicity of the Hinomaru Flag, this film encapsulates what it means to be a fan of Japan.
