When Coca-Cola completely flipped the GTA formula in this iconic 2006 commercial. 🥤🎮🔥

What if the world of Grand Theft Auto suddenly stopped being about chaos… and started being about doing good?

That was the clever idea behind Coca-Cola’s famous “Happiness Factory” / GTA-style advertising campaign from the mid-2000s, which played with the visual language of open-world crime games while turning the usual formula completely upside down.

Instead of the protagonist stealing cars, escaping police and causing destruction, the commercial presents a world where the same kind of gritty urban environment can be used for something completely different.

The clever part is the contrast.

GTA had become famous for its open-world freedom, crime, chaos and over-the-top missions. Coca-Cola took some of those familiar visual cues and transformed the idea into a story about community, kindness and positive interactions.

It was basically the advertising equivalent of saying:

“What if the game had a completely different mission?” 😂

And that's why the commercial stood out.

Rather than simply showing someone drinking a Coke and saying it tastes good, the campaign used a recognizable cultural language to make the advertisement feel like something you'd actually want to watch.

This was also a great example of how brands can borrow from popular entertainment without directly copying the entire experience.

The gritty city.
The exaggerated characters.
The cinematic camera angles.
The sense of an open world.

But instead of using those elements to create destruction, Coca-Cola turned them into a feel-good story.

It essentially took the expectations people had from a GTA-style world and then pulled the rug out from underneath them.

And that's what makes old advertising like this so memorable.
