The anime that showed the HORRORS of the Hiroshima bombing. ☢️🇯🇵

Barefoot Gen (Hadashi no Gen) is not a typical anime about war.

Released as an animated film in 1983, it was adapted from the semi-autobiographical manga by Keiji Nakazawa, who experienced the Hiroshima atomic bombing as a child.

The story follows Gen Nakaoka, a young boy living in Hiroshima with his family during World War II.

Then, on August 6, 1945, everything changes.

At 8:15 a.m., an atomic bomb was detonated over Hiroshima.

The film doesn't portray the event as a distant historical statistic. Instead, it follows ordinary people experiencing the immediate consequences — the blinding flash, the blast, collapsing buildings, fires and the devastating injuries that followed.

And that's what makes Barefoot Gen so difficult to watch.

The story stays close to the perspective of a child.

There are no superheroes.
No dramatic victory.
No romanticized battlefield.

Just civilians trying to survive an event they could barely understand.

The animation shows how the destruction continued even after the initial explosion. Fires spread through the city, survivors searched for family members, and people struggled with severe injuries and the aftermath of radiation exposure.

The film was created decades after the bombing, but its emotional foundation came directly from Nakazawa's own experience. His autobiographical work was shaped by what he witnessed in Hiroshima and by the loss of family members in the bombing.

Barefoot Gen therefore became more than an animated film.

It became a visual record of civilian suffering during one of the most devastating events of the 20th century.

Today, Hiroshima and Nagasaki remain central to discussions about nuclear weapons, war and the consequences of their use.
