Every place has something to say.

Introducing TYPEONE Magazine issue #11: the wayfinding issue 🔥⬆️

As Patrick Eley, Creative Director of DNCO and Guest Editor for 11, says. Some signs whisper. Some shout. Some welcome us in. Others tell us where to go, what to do, and what not to touch.

At the heart of it, through vernacular signage, pictograms, airport systems, urban navigation, sonic cues and digital maps, Eley and the DNCO wayfinding team explore the many ways we find our way through the world, and how the signs that guide us can shape how a place feels, reads and becomes familiar.

Across each section, contributors explore wayfinding as more than a practical problem. From Pooja Saxena’s documentation of India’s disappearing handcrafted signage and Rosie Flanagan’s exploration of Ireland’s vernacular shopfronts, to Nippon Design Centre’s pictograms for Japan and Minoru Mukaiya’s iconic train departure jingles, the issue looks at the local accents, cultural nuances and hidden systems that give places their identity.

Elsewhere, conversations with Cardozo Kindersley Workshop, Andreas Uebele, Onari Projects, and Sofie Beier examine the relationship between material, architecture, legibility, and perception, while Katee Hui explores why we trust arrows, and Simon Havard looks beneath the surface at the engineering behind signage. We also investigate Google Maps and the enormous influence digital navigation now has over how we see and understand the world around us.

Wayfinding becomes a dialogue, sometimes quiet and discreet, sometimes loud and abrasive; a gentle nudge in the right direction, a reassuring voice in an unfamiliar place, or a system so familiar that we barely notice it at all.
