😳 This British “Catclaw” concept was designed to punish drivers who mounted the pavement by automatically puncturing their tires.
⠀
Created in 2018 by Yannick Read of the Environmental Transport Association, the device was roughly the size of half a small orange and could be installed directly into a curb or sidewalk.
⠀
When a heavy vehicle rolled over it, the weight pushed the housing down and exposed a sharp steel tube capable of rapidly deflating the tire.
⠀
A pedestrian standing on top would normally be too light to activate the mechanism, causing the spike to remain safely hidden.
⠀
Despite the viral demonstrations, Catclaw was never intended for widespread installation and the ETA acknowledged that a device like this would face major practical and legal problems.
⠀
Instead, the extreme concept was created to draw attention to dangerous pavement parking and the problems it creates for pedestrians, wheelchair users and others.
⠀
Would something this extreme actually stop people from parking on sidewalks?
⠀
What are your thoughts? 🤔💭
