🚶 Quebec’s road safety authority once turned an ordinary crosswalk into a barrier that physically forced drivers to stop for pedestrians.
⠀
The stunt was created by the SAAQ in Montréal as part of its 2019 pedestrian safety campaign.
⠀
After showing drivers repeatedly failing to yield, the yellow crosswalk strips suddenly rose vertically from the road when pedestrians approached.
⠀
The raised panels formed a temporary wall across the lane, leaving approaching drivers with no choice but to stop.
⠀
Written across the barrier was the message: “Crosswalks protect pedestrians. Thank you for stopping.”
⠀
The installation was a publicity stunt rather than a permanent traffic system, designed to remind drivers that pedestrians already have priority at marked crossings.
⠀
Sometimes the simplest way to make people understand a rule is to make ignoring it impossible.
⠀
Would something like this actually make drivers more respectful of crosswalks?
⠀
What are your thoughts? 🤔💭
