🤖 Boston Dynamics’ Atlas went from an experimental hydraulic robot doing basic acrobatics to a production-ready electric humanoid in just a few years.
⠀
Back in 2019, Atlas was still a research platform built around hydraulics, with Boston Dynamics using gymnastics and parkour to push the limits of balance, locomotion and whole-body control.
⠀
Those experiments eventually produced increasingly complex jumps, vaults, backflips and obstacle courses that helped engineers develop better perception and motion-control systems.
⠀
In 2024, Boston Dynamics officially retired the hydraulic Atlas and revealed an entirely new fully electric version designed with greater strength, dexterity and range of motion.
⠀
By 2026, the company had unveiled a production-ready Atlas built specifically for real industrial work, with deployments planned at Hyundai and Google DeepMind.
⠀
The newest robot is designed to learn complex tasks, work autonomously and move in ways that are not limited by the normal range of motion of a human body.
⠀
Watching the 2019 and 2026 robots side by side makes seven years of robotics development look absolutely unreal.
⠀
Where do you think humanoid robots like Atlas will be another seven years from now?
⠀
What are your thoughts? 🤔💭
