Long before drifting became a polished motorsport, Saudi Arabia had an underground car scene throwing ordinary vehicles sideways at speeds reportedly reaching 260 km/h (160 mph).

Known as Tafheet, and commonly associated with the term Hajwalah, the illegal driving culture traces its roots to the late 1970s before becoming a major part of Saudi youth car culture in later decades.

Unlike modern drifting, Tafheet often happened on huge public highways, with drivers using aggressive weight transfer to send cars into massive high-speed slides while spectators watched from dangerously close distances.

Many of the cars were essentially normal production vehicles rather than purpose-built drift machines, making the speeds and angles even more surreal.

Toyota Land Cruisers and other SUVs also became associated with the scene, including the spectacular two-wheel driving commonly called sidewall skiing.

Drivers and passengers sometimes took the spectacle even further by climbing onto vehicles or hanging outside while they were moving, creating some of the wildest automotive imagery to come out of the region.

By the 2000s, videos and photos helped turn these underground gatherings into an internationally recognizable piece of Saudi car culture, even as authorities increasingly targeted the activity.

Decades later, the grainy footage of boxy Land Cruisers balancing on two wheels and everyday cars sliding across enormous desert highways remains an unmistakable snapshot of a very different era of car culture.

Would you ever have wanted to witness peak-era Tafheet in person?
