😮🧡 McLaren is officially breaking from its two-seat supercar formula, confirming that its first performance SUV is on the way as part of a major expansion of the brand.

The upcoming model will use a hybrid powertrain and is expected to reach customers before the end of the decade.

McLaren COO Michael Straughan specifically identified the Lamborghini Urus and Aston Martin DBX as competitors, while saying the Ferrari Purosangue follows a different concept.

McLaren says power-to-weight ratio will remain fundamental, although the company is still evaluating whether the SUV can realistically use its traditional carbon-fiber construction or will require aluminum.

The SUV will be a McLaren-specific project rather than a vehicle shared with another manufacturer, marking a major departure from the company’s traditional sports-car architecture.

Reports have also pointed toward a four-door, five-seat layout, potentially combining all-wheel drive with a V8 hybrid powertrain.

The SUV arrives alongside a roughly £500 million investment that will expand McLaren’s UK manufacturing and R&D footprint and support a new vehicle-production facility.

McLaren also plans to manufacture future engines in-house for the first time, while the wider expansion is expected to create 1,000 UK jobs by 2032.

For a company built around lightweight mid-engine supercars, adding a practical high-performance SUV could represent one of the biggest changes to McLaren’s road-car lineup in decades.
