😳🚨 A viral Lexus clip is raising a pretty serious question about how well modern driver-monitoring systems work across different faces.

The video, which has reportedly surpassed 13 million views, shows the dashboard warning “Closed Eyes Detected. Look Forward” while the driver appears to have his eyes open and pointed straight ahead.

Lexus uses an interior driver-monitor camera to determine whether the driver is watching the road, closing their eyes, or showing signs of inattention.

In this case, the system appears to have produced a false positive while the car was traveling at roughly 63 mph.

That single clip does not prove the system malfunctioned because of the driver’s ethnicity or eye shape, but it has sparked a much bigger discussion about computer vision and how these systems are validated.

Interestingly, Lexus itself warns that driver monitoring can be affected by strong sunlight, reflections from glasses or sunglasses, changes in cabin brightness, camera obstruction, and the position of the driver’s face.

Euro NCAP even requires manufacturers seeking driver-monitoring credit to demonstrate functionality across different skin complexions and eyelid apertures, along with varying lighting and eyewear conditions.

That makes this more than just a funny dashboard glitch because these cameras are becoming an increasingly important part of modern ADAS and hands-free driving systems.

As cars become better at watching their drivers, false warnings could become a major frustration if the technology cannot consistently interpret the enormous variety of people sitting behind the wheel.

Do you think automakers are testing driver-monitoring technology thoroughly enough across different faces and real-world driving conditions?

What are your thoughts? 🤔💭
