😮 The 24 Hours of Le Mans could potentially leave the WEC after 2027 if the FIA and ACO fail to extend their current agreement.

The FIA has confirmed its existing deal with the ACO remains in place through the end of 2027, meaning Le Mans is not disappearing from the championship anytime before then.

The controversy started after Auto Motor und Sport reported that the two organizations could ultimately part ways, with the FIA potentially seeking a different promoter for the World Endurance Championship.

That matters because the ACO owns and governs the 24 Hours of Le Mans, so an FIA championship promoted without the ACO would not automatically include endurance racing’s biggest event.

Both sides have since said discussions about the championship beyond 2027 are continuing, with WEC describing the negotiations as constructive.

The FIA and ACO have jointly built the modern WEC since its launch in 2012, making any potential separation a massive structural change for international endurance racing.

The timing is especially interesting because WEC is currently enjoying major manufacturer involvement and renewed momentum around the Hypercar and LMGT3 eras.

The FIA, ACO and IMSA also recently agreed in principle on a unified direction for the next generation of Hypercar regulations planned for 2030, meaning a split could create some serious questions for the sport’s long-term technical structure.

For now, Le Mans remains firmly on the official 2027 WEC calendar, and no decision to separate the race from the championship has been announced.

Would the World Endurance Championship even feel like the WEC without the 24 Hours of Le Mans? 🤔💭
