I have given birth four times. All four at home. Five babies, including my twins, with one being breech, born nineteen minutes apart. I have never once been in a hospital for a birth.

And I am so tired of this conversation.

If you birth at home: you’re reckless. You’re putting yourself and your baby at risk. You got lucky.

If you get an epidural: you couldn’t handle it. You didn’t really experience birth.

If you have a C-section: you let them cut the baby out. It’s not a real birth.

There is no version of how a woman brings a baby into the world that isn’t criticized by someone. There is no choice that escapes judgment. There is no birth story that some corner of the internet won’t find a problem with.

And I am done with it.

Every single one of those births — the epidural, the C-section, the home birth, the hospital birth, the medicated, the unmedicated — represents a woman doing one of the hardest things a human body can do. The method is not the measure of the woman.

My home births were not reckless. They were informed, supported, attended by a licensed midwife and/or an OB who was present in my home, and made possible by decades of birth education from my mother who has been doing this for forty years.

Your epidural was not weakness. There is no easy version of childbirth.

Your C-section was not a shortcut. It was a birth.

The only thing that needs to be true about how you give birth is that it was the right decision for you, made with your body, your baby, and the birth team that supports you best.

Everything else is noise.

Can we please start lifting each other up instead? 🤍

How were your babies born — and did you ever feel judged for it? I want to hear it. ↓
