A former FBI agent says investigators should expect more cases involving AI-generated child sexual abuse material after a Portland man was sentenced to 30 years in prison. 

Prosecutors say Patrick D. Swanson, 30, used artificial intelligence to place children’s faces on sexually explicit images and videos. He then traded that material with a person in Canada in exchange for real child sexual abuse material, according to Sumner County District Attorney General Thomas Dean.

Canadian authorities discovered the exchanges after arresting the person Swanson had been communicating with and alerted investigators in the United States. A joint investigation involving Portland police, the FBI, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security led to Swanson’s arrest in November 2025.
