Joe Milton III is a 6-foot-5, 236-pound quarterback who played college ball at Michigan and Tennessee before being drafted by the New England Patriots in the sixth round in 2024. He has appeared in five NFL games total between New England and Dallas, completing 37 of 53 passes with two touchdowns and two interceptions. His arm talent has always been the headline; he also showed up against the Giants themselves in Week 18 of 2025, hitting Ryan Flournoy on a 33-yard completion. This summer he looked brilliant at times in the preseason but ultimately slipped behind Sam Howell in the race to be Dak Prescott’s backup, finishing 29-for-43 in three preseason games for 378 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. Dallas cut him and re-signed him to the practice squad the day after roster cut-down day.

That’s where the Giants come in. Dart got sandwiched between two Rams pass rushers on the first drive of Monday night’s Week 2 loss, and although his ACL is intact, he needs surgery to repair his MCL, PCL, and meniscus, which will cost him the rest of the season. Jameis Winston is the starter, but Winston is a pure pocket passer with very limited mobility, while Milton is very much a dual-threat quarterback who could be a more natural fit in the Greg Roman–Matt Nagy offense. ESPN’s Jordan Rodgers argued Milton can run the zone read like Dart did, as he did in college, and push the ball downfield. The Giants wouldn’t need a trade: NFL rules let teams sign players directly from another team’s practice squad to their active 53-man roster, though they’d have to keep him on the active roster for at least three weeks. The realistic plan is Milton as the QB2 and change-of-pace option behind Winston, a free, high-upside swing that also takes a developmental arm away from a division rival. As of the latest reports, no signing has been announced.
