Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee has refused to spare Christa Pike, whose execution is scheduled for Wednesday over the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer.

If carried out, it would be the state's first execution of a woman in more than two centuries.

Pike was 18 when she killed Slemmer, and her lawyers argue that her age, mental illness and history of severe childhood abuse should be considered. They have now asked the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene, seeking a last-minute stay.

Slemmer's mother has said she wants the execution to proceed, after waiting decades for the sentence to be carried out.
