After 16 years with the program, Coach Joe Mullen will be retiring at the end of this season to spend more time with his family.

Coach Mullen took over the Head Coaching reins for the Hokies in 2011, building on the existing foundation and firmly establishing the Hokies as a top-tier team in the ACHA Southeast Region.

During his tenure, the Hokies have won league championships in both the MACH and the ACCHL, have appeared in 7 ACHA SE Regional Tournaments, and an ACHA National Championship Tournament.  Coach Mullen has developed players who have won Player of the Year awards in both the MACH and ACCHL, have been named to the ACHA All American teams, as well as inducted into the ACCHL Hall of Fame.  He has also been recognized as Coach of the Year in both the MACH and ACCHL, and his 228 wins established him as the winningest coach in the history of the program as well as the ACCHL.

In addition to his accomplishments on the ice, Coach Mullen has helped to develop a culture that is family focused and values hard work, creating graduates who have become successful businessmen, engineers, architects, scientists, and, most importantly, fathers of families who are now also giving back by teaching/coaching future generations of Hokie hockey players.

We thank Coach Mullen for all that he’s done for our program, and we wish him all the best in this next chapter!!
