Things you might be doing wrong as a sports photographer in 2026.

How to blacklist you or your outlet from covering a team (speedrun edition).

Time is money. Making your photos look as close to the final edit in camera will help you tremendously. In big time moments, you don’t have time to make major corrections. Get it right in camera and you will speed up your turn around time!

“Aura” is NOT aura. Capture something worthwhile. A photo of someone standing around is not a photo. Breathing is not an action, look for PEAK ACTION.

Admin will tell you where you’re allowed. Respect those boundaries and respect those working around you. Be aware of those things during games.

1/1000th of a second is simply not fast enough to capture and freeze action. Don’t be afraid or unwilling to push that shutter speed up!

Between plays or in down time, review your work and tag your selects so that when you get back to your computer all of the photos you need are ready to go! Going through your work as you shoot also forces you to see what you are doing right/wrong in the moment and you can make adjustments accordingly.

Look the part. Don’t look like you just rolled out of bed. One of the easiest ways to differentiate yourself is to be presentable. Ditch the slides and take the backpack off. 9/10 you don’t need anything out of your backpack and it makes you look far more youthful than it does a “sports photographer.”

Meet new people and make those connections! Find people that are willing to give you constructive, but also critical advice so you might be able to become a better shooter. There are MANY people that are more than willing to help, but you have to be willing to ask!

Uncommon opinion: I find that the speed of using the smaller file size in JPEG is definitely quicker than RAW and I find far less noise in low light situations out of a JPEG. I know it’s crazy, but I rarely if ever shoot in RAW unless specified by a client.
