Most of us know the feeling of reaching for a banana, only for it to be brown, spotty, and just a bit past its peak. ⁣

Yet for shoppers in England, that could be a feeling of the past. The UK government has approved the sale of gene-edited bananas that resist browning as they age.⁣

Developed by UK company Tropic Biosciences, the bananas use CRISPR techniques that find, cut and modify genetic sequences. ⁣
⁣
With the government estimating that roughly 20% of bananas are wasted as they go brown, the initiative aims to reduce food waste, whilst simultaneously improving farmer profits. ⁣
⁣
While the bananas still need to be submitted to the country's Food Standards Agency for the final go-ahead, the government greenlight demonstrates that the UK is taking advantage of a looser post-Brexit regulatory landscape. ⁣
