THE INTERNET REACTS AS TIM REAM, AKA ‘MOUND CITY MALDINI’, RETIRES FROM USMNT 🇺🇸

The Saint Louis native, who amassed 86 caps for the USMNT over a 16-year spell, announced his retirement from the international team ahead of a special ceremony before the USMNT’s match vs. Chile in his hometown.

A strange — but no less impressive — international career overall for the 38-year-old Charlotte FC defender, earning 86 caps over 16 years, with huge gaps strewn throughout. Jürgen Klinsmann kept him out for a year after Bob Bradley selected him; then he lost his way in October of 2017 after the team failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. Gregg Berhalter iced him for 14 months, but then brought him back into the mix after Chris Richards and Miles Robinson were injured right before the 2022 World Cup.

Ream's late-career resurgence was massive. The St. Louis University product thought 2022 would be his farewell, but as the team became younger and younger, Mauricio Pochettino relied on Ream more and more as captain. He was still going strong in 2026, becoming the oldest World Cup player in USMNT history at 38. Time caught up with him agonizingly in the Belgium beatdown, but he will be remembered for his longevity, tenacity, and for being just a great human being.

It has been a joy to watch this child of Missouri — this man-bun-clad pillar of the U.S. Men’s National Team backline — revel in every moment and stay humble throughout. Thank you for your service, Tim 🦅❤️🫡
