ALIGN — STOP POSTAL-CODE AUTO INSURANCE DISPARITIES 🚗
Episode 03

“It’s data.”
“It’s statistics.”
“People in that area cost more to insure.”

My answer? Then challenge the system and the assumptions behind the data.

#Ontario insurers are permitted to use geographic territories in auto-insurance rating, and FSRA—the provincial regulator—reviews insurers’ proposed rates and says its role is to ensure rates are fair and not excessive. FSRA has also been reviewing how territorial rating works in the GTA.

I don't accept that a responsible driver should simply shrug when geography contributes to a substantially different premium. Your driving record should matter. Your vehicle should matter. Your claims history should matter. Your postal code should not become a financial sentence.

A #Toronto councillor cannot order an insurance company to change its premiums. But a councillor can fight: bring the issue to Council, demand data, organize residents, press Queen’s Park and FSRA, seek hearings and resolutions, and keep the issue in front of regulators until Etobicoke North gets answers.

And this isn't some imaginary policy debate. Ontario legislators have previously introduced legislation specifically seeking to prohibit geographic-region rating in auto insurance—showing that the question of “postal-code discrimination” has been debated at Queen's Park.

I searched the publicly available Ward 1 candidate material I could find. I can verify that this is a prominent part of my published Ward 1 platform; I cannot responsibly claim that none of the other nine candidates has ever discussed it anywhere.

WARD 1 HAS PAID ENOUGH.
PRESS FSRA. PRESS QUEEN’S PARK. DEMAND THE DATA.
FIGHT FOR FAIRNESS.

Your postal code is not a crime.
