Sometimes “I’m tired” means “I’m lonely.” Sometimes a smile is covering something much heavier.

This October, let’s make space for honest conversations about depression and men’s mental health.

Depression is not always obvious. It can look like irritability, exhaustion, sleeping problems, isolation, loss of interest, physical pain, self-criticism, reckless behaviour, or feeling completely overwhelmed. It can affect thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and physical health—and it can look different from person to person.

Someone may appear to be the happiest person in the room while struggling deeply inside. Depression is not a choice, laziness, or something that can be fixed by simply saying “cheer up.”

If this feels familiar, you do not have to explain everything perfectly. Try one small step: tell someone you trust, book a GP appointment, join a support group, or send a message that says, “I’m not doing great at the moment.”

Talking saves lives. Silence doesn’t.

Save this carousel, share it with someone who may need it, and check in with a mate who has gone quiet.

UK support:
• Samaritans: Call 116 123 free, any time, day or night.
• CALM: Call 0800 58 58 58, open 5pm–midnight every day.
• Shout: Text SHOUT to 85258 for free, confidential, 24/7 text support in the UK.

If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 999. For urgent mental-health help in England, call NHS 111 and select the mental-health option.

What is one thing you wish more people understood about depression?
