In August 1664, four English gunboats arrived off the coast of New Netherland, threatening the Dutch colony. While Director-General Peter Stuyvesant wanted to fight, he ultimately surrendered without firing a single shot in order to save the city from total destruction and looting. The British terms of surrender were unexpected: instead of wiping out Dutch culture, the treaty allowed the Dutch to keep their property, business laws, and unique religious tolerance. Discover how this 1664 agreement planted the seeds for individual rights that later shaped the U.S. Bill of Rights.
