What did it mean to grow up Nuyorican in 1970s New York City? In this look back to 1973, "Realidades" host David Diaz brings together young poets, student activists, and former gang members from East Harlem to the South Bronx. They confront the deep tensions between their Puerto Rican heritage, the heavy pressures of assimilation, and life on the city streets. From grassroots alternative schools to a performance of "Maria Cristina" by Sandra María Estéves — a Bronx-born Dominican Boricua poet and founding member of the Nuyorican poetry movement — they detail how they navigate language, identity, and cultural survival.

Community efforts to preserve history come to life through local political movements and institutions like "El Museo del Barrio," on Manhattan’s Museum Mile on Fifth Avenue.

This 1973 "Youth and Culture" episode from "Realidades" is part of the THIRTEEN Vault. "Realidades" (1971 - 1977) was public television’s first national Latino show, hosted by community activist Humberto Cintron, offering a mix of documentaries, cultural arts, and news.

From September 15 through October 15, The WNET Group celebrates Hispanic and Latino history and culture with the community’s unique voices in Honoring Our Stories: Hispanic Heritage Month. Dramatic films; profiles of literary, music, and artistic visionaries; commentaries on identity and history; landmark series from the THIRTEEN Vault; and culinary explorations make up the diverse programming offered for broadcast and streaming audiences.
