The American Revolution was more than a fight against King George III—it was an intense civil disconnection that tore family from family, and neighbor against neighbor across the colonies, including places like New York’s Mohawk Valley.

Whether they feared mob rule and anarchy, or viewed disobedience as a violation of their faith as devout members of the Church of England, nearly one-third of colonial Americans remained loyal to King George III during the Revolutionary War. (Yes, he of Hamilton fame.) Seeking security under British protection, thousands of American-born Loyalists fled north to Canada and established temporary communities like "Niagara-on-the-Lake." Led by figures like Colonel John Butler and his "Butler's Rangers," Loyalist guerrilla forces launched counter-attacks back into the valley. From the ambush at Oriskany and the siege of Fort Stanwix to the tragic split of the Iroquois Confederacy, their exile turned into a bitter struggle for survival as news reached them from home of their properties being auctioned off and neighbors subjected to tarring and feathering.

Part three of the four-part program "Paths of Rebellion: New York in the Revolution" (1976) is from the THIRTEEN Vault.
