🧐 Sometimes straight lines leading into a rounded corner gives off the impression that the shape is concave, or even worse, the joins look kinked. This is called the bone effect, and we come across this problem a lot in logo design. It happens because our brains are really good at anticipating patterns. So when we see a straight line, we expect it to keep on going straight, and curves to keep curving. So when we combine the two, it can sometimes look like a kink, or even a bend inwards.

To get around it, we need to smooth that transition from curved to straight.

In illustrator, start by drawing an ellipse and going to Effect - Warp - Inflate. Adjust the bend slider, then expand appearance and rotate 45 degrees to finish!

If you want to know more about the bone effect, you can read all about it in The Principles of Logo Design by @george_bokhua
